Paul Fagan playing piano in Dublin City Hall at a wedding ceremony

Why Springsteen and MJ Just “Worked” at Dublin City Hall

I was back in Dublin’s City Hall recently for a wedding ceremony and drinks reception, and I’m still buzzing from it. I’ve performed in this building more times than I can count, but there is something about that space that never gets old. It’s one of those timeless Dublin spots that has looked exactly the same for over a hundred years, and every time I set up my piano under that massive dome, it feels like a bit of a “pinch-me” moment.

One thing I really wanted to share from this particular wedding was the setlist. We did something a bit different—mixing Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson into the ceremony and reception.

Now, on paper, you might think the “Boss” and the “King of Pop” wouldn’t fit in a grand, 18th-century marble hall, but I’m telling you, it worked an absolute treat. There’s a certain energy to those songs that just filled the Rotunda perfectly. It was amazing to hear those familiar melodies echoing off the stone; it really cut through the “museum” feel of the building and made the whole thing feel like a proper celebration.

The Best Part of the Day

The drinks reception afterwards was particularly nice. The couple had a few other great vendors in serving food and wine, and the whole vibe was just… pleasant. That’s the only way to describe it.

Even though City Hall is huge and grand, the reception felt really relaxed and “airy.” As a wedding pianist, I love playing this part of the day because the acoustics allow the music to travel without being overpowering. I could see the guests really relaxing into the space, enjoying a glass of wine, and leaning into that big, open atmosphere.

Thinking of City Hall for your Big Day?

If you’re looking at Dublin City Hall for your own wedding, you’ve probably already fallen in love with the architecture. But from my side of the piano, here is why I think it’s a winner:

  • It’s Timeless: You’re playing in a piece of history. It feels special the moment you walk in.
  • The Vibe is Flexible: You can go from a very formal, “hushed” ceremony to a bright, breezy drinks reception in the same room.
  • The Surprise Factor: Like we found out with the MJ and Springsteen tracks, this venue can handle modern music brilliantly. You don’t have to stick to the “classics” just because the building is old!

Let’s Chat Music

I’ve become a bit of a regular at City Hall over the years, and I know exactly how to make a piano sound its best in that big Rotunda. Whether you’re after something traditional or you want to follow this couple’s lead and throw in some unexpected hits, I’d love to help.

If you’re searching for a wedding musician who knows the ins and outs of this venue (and how to make sure your favorite songs sound great in it!), feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to chat through song ideas or give you a bit of advice on how the music flows in such a big space.
