Online Piano Lessons | Ireland

Paul is pleased to offer individual and paired online piano lessons from his home in Co. Kildare for the 2021/2022 academic year.

The lessons take place on Monday evenings and they last for 30 minutes.

Please read on for more details.

How do these work?

Paul teaches using the Zoom application on Mac/Windows OS and so using two webcams, one pointed at him and one overhead his piano keys, he gives you a tailored, interactive learning experience.

You must have a decent quality webcam and it’s preferable that it focuses on your hands and your piano keys.

And that’s it.

Paul likes to have a short Zoom meeting with you, before you begin with him, in order to determine your level and musical interests / goals.

“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”

How do online piano lessons work?

After an initial Zoom meeting with Paul, the lessons take place at a scheduled time once each week. Using the Zoom application for Mac and Windows desktops or tablets, Paul teaches using an overhead view webcam and a professional microphone. The student must have a webcam and Zoom access in order to partake in the lesson. During the lesson, Paul will walk you through the work you need to do in order to make progress. He does this by demonstration and explanation. Additionally, he asks you to play your homework and new material during the lesson for real time feedback.

Are online lessons better than in-person lessons?

Both have their advantages. Online lessons are more concise and less intense because you’re operating from the comfort of a familiar environment. Adding to this is the fact that you get as much and perhaps more feedback online as you would in-person since it is a compact and clean mode of communication. It is obviously important that both teacher and student have a strong WiFi connection in order that there’s no interruption to the learning. Otherwise, all piano playing in all genres can be effectively taught and learned just as well as if they were in person. However, the key thing revolves around how much practice the student is actually willing to do in-between lessons.
